Haley, a young white South African boy, struggles to separate himself from his racist upbringing in a time of institutionalized bigotry and injustice. He is conflicted as to whether he should fall in line with the expected prejudices his family has adopted or embrace the kindness and advice from his African mentor, Sam. Humiliated by his alcholic father’s ignorance, Hally looks to Sam, who shows him how to build and fly his own kite, finally having something—and someone—he can look up to.
